SaveBig Island is not known for its well-developed MTB trails. Due to a lot of private land and initiatives against the spread of invasive species, it is difficult to legally get trails permitted for bicycle use.
Yet, what Big Island trails lack in the features-and-berms department, they most certainly make up for with their diverse terrains. Here, you’ll find wet and rooty technical climbs in the forest as well as lava rock gardens as far as the eye can see. There are gravel rides along the coast and rough, jagged rock epics down volcanoes. And, there are 50 mile stretches that take you through the paniolo country with rolling green hills and pastures.

This is absolutely one of the most fun singletracks I’ve ever ridden in Hawaii. Although short, trails is worth riding over and over and over again. Upon arriving at you'll find plenty of parking. The trail head is one of the most...
• 75 ★ 4.7 • 3,658 ft • 0 ft • 42 •
Great Flowing Singletrack descent with roots and rocks. Watch out for what the wild pigs push out on the trail. The climb is challenging and technical. Pedal bikes will have a couple hike-a-bikes. A strong e-bike rider can clean the...
• 60 ★ 4.5 • 2 miles • 15 ft • 42 •
This is a very unique bike ride. The riding surface is black lava flow and the course is laid out in a "Moab style" with white spray paint lines guiding the way from the road toward the ocean. The difficulty is very low with most of the...
• 100 ★ 3.8 • 2,720 ft • 0 ft • 39 •
It is recommended to hike the Kaloko trails in a clockwise direction. This is a very rooty and challenging climb from the parking lot when accessing . It's a technical and fun downhill with a few punchy climbs thrown in.
• 20 ★ 5.0 • 41 miles • 2,044 ft • 39 •
A long, long, did I mention long? Fire road that circles Mauna Kea. This 40+ miles ride is packed full of stunning island views. Be warned, this is not for the faint of heart! Let me begin by recommending you don't do this ride unless...
• 45 ★ 3.0 • 4,321 ft • 253 ft • 29 •
Doubletrack trail connecting the top of the trail system.
• 30 ★ 3.5 • 3,235 ft • 479 ft • 29 •
Loose Double track that runs straight up the hill. This is the quickest return for DH laps on or Jurassic but it's strenuous. On a pedal bike there's several sections that are steep, on an e-mtb it's a reasonable climb. If you use this...
• 90 ★ 3.0 • 1 mile • 415 ft • 24 •
Mostly used as a climbing trail to get to the top of Perimeter trail or to take one of the other offshoots. This is a leafy and rooty uphill but, all-in-all, not too challenging. If wet, there are some slick sections.
