Pipestone area east of Butte and west of Whitehall includes a network of 4 wheel and double track trails as well as some singletrack. The area is rideable almost all year long and is best in the spring and later fall when the temperatures are cooler. Lower down there are very few forested areas, so during the hot summer days, bring plenty of water. In addition, tubeless tires are recommended because of the abundant prickly pear cactus. Watch for rattlesnakes in the summer

The trails are often sandy, rocky and contain many steep ups and downs. Bear this is mind when planning a trip as riding times may be longer than expected.

To make it easier to plan routes and differentiate different types of trails, the current system of trail grading is as follows:
Multi-use Primary Access Trails: Suitable for most vehicles.
Multi-use Secondary Access trails: Suitable for 4x4 vehicles.
ATV primary color graded: Doubletrack trails suitable for ATV's and below.
Multi-use color graded: Motorized or non-motorized singletrack
        Primary Trail Type: Cross-Country
        Shuttleable: YES
        Land Status: National Forest

        80 0.0 1 mile 165 ft 84 atv
Keeps you off the dusty road. The northern half is a pleasant gradient and follows right beside the creek. The southern half is steep and hilly. Rideable on a mountain bike in either direction, but definitely easier going north.

This singletrack is very sandy (yes, more so than the Pipestone average). If you are on a mountainbike going downhill it can still be fast and fun. If you are going uphill however, the sand will likely make things difficult. In saying...

        5 0.0 2 miles 141 ft 65 atv
Less popular blue difficulty doubletrack. This atv/orv/ohv primary trail can be used both directions and has a moderate overall physical rating with a 141 ft blue climb. On average it takes 8 minutes to complete this trail.
