Description:
The trail was in great condition up to Cupola Creek. At that point, the trail was completely covered in snow, and the creek below can be heard but not seen.
We talked to two other couples who were on their way back after navigating the snow at the top and they said it was technical and steep at the snow line. Since we weren’t prepared with poles or ice grips for our shoes, we turned back after crossing the creek. We felt that the ice pack could be unstable making it dangerous, on top of the trail markers being obscured by snow, and the fact that we had our dog with us.
We made a wise decision for ourselves, but those with proper gear and lots of experience could probably make a better assessment as to the safety.
Prior to Cupola Creek there are a couple of downed pines, but totally passable and a good leg/lung workout in elevation. We will definitely return better prepared and aim to summit Flora!
