The Cape Cod Pathways was initiated in 1996 as a regional trail network intended to run from Falmouth to Provincetown. The Barnstable segment, marked with red blazes, traverses the greenbelt of protected land across the town, passing through the properties of West Barnstable Conservation Area, Bridge Creek Conservation Area, Clay Hill, Barnstable State Forest, Old Jail Lane Conservation Area and the Trayser property, and nearly crossing the town, stopping short of the Yarmouth town line due to private property. Trail users will pass through a myriad of different landscapes and environments, ranging from lowland salt marsh to hilly moraine, and from remote woodland to bustling village center. This 11-mile main route could also be a link in the developing 14,000 mile American Perimeter Trail, a long distance route and conservation corridor aiming to circumnavigate the Lower 48.
