The Wasteland is a wild west type of place where you may find discarded vehicles, homeless camps, people shooting guns and zooming around on ATV's. Care and awareness should be exercised diligently. Access maybe subject to change and is at your own risk

This loop will get to away from Buttes typical buff singletrack and onto something slower and more technical. Almost 6 miles of this route is singletrack with the remainder being a mix of doubletrack, bike trail and road. Faster and more competent riders who are familar with the trails will be able to do this loop in about an hour. If that's not you and/or you are unfamiliar with this area I would allow closer to 2hrs. GPS is recommended for navigating both the singletrack, and the maze of doubletrack. Best ridden counter clockwise to maximize downhill fun:

Start by descending the banked turns of Montana Tech Park, then ascending Whisky Gulch all the way to the North of the Park at Orofino Gulch Rd. After a short stint on pavement, the doubletrack will take you into The Wasteland. The route takes you on a scenic traverse between the 2 highest summits of The Wasteland which also includes some short steep rocky sections. Near the top of the 2nd summit, just after a climbing through a short steep rocky section, the 1st section of technical singletrack will start from a rock cairn on your left.

This section of Wasteland singletrack is steeper and more out in the open than the others. It is also faster and perhaps the easier of the three. It starts as a traverse across a rocky and grassy ridge. Immediately after the trails apex, it heads steeply down though some trees, before a series of switchbacks and traverses down the hill. The trail will drop into and snake it's way down a little rocky gully, before climbing out and completing it's journey on relatively flat but bumpy grassland.

Ore Shredder is your 2nd section of technical singletrack, it is a narrow trail with some tight switchbacks with rock obstacles that give few places to relax. This trail is much easier to ride downhill and is a main reason why this loop is easier counter clockwise. People have made efforts to mark corners and junctions with rocks, however GPS is recommended, especially at trail ends and where the trail crosses doubletrack.

The 3rd section of the technical singletrack, Slag Slayer, starts after crossing Bluebird Trail Road. The trail is not as relentless and narrow as Ore Shredder and there is not as significant a difficulty difference between direction travelled. There are several "slab-like" features, offering fun obstacles to ascend and descend in both directions. Going the direction of this route you have the option of descending the variant line "Orphan Bike" which is the most technical section of singletrack on this loop, equivalent to an easy double-black diamond.

Slag Slayer ends the old railway gravel bike path which to can follow up hill most of the way back to Montana Tech.

Although E-bikes are not permitted in Montana Tech Park, they are fine in The Wasteland and could ride a variation of this loop that avoids the park.
