From Pureora village, this trail heads south through four ecologically significant areas, passing 800 year old trees, a bush tramway and historic timber milling sites along the way. It has some of NZ's highest and longest suspension bridges, a tunnel at the Ongarue Spiral and interesting interpretation panels along the trail.
The trail is 85km long and made up by: 40% old bush tramlines, 35% new single track, and 25% new and old logging roads. Can be done by the fit over one day, or for a more leisurely trip, two days staying at a camp site or booking accommodation at the Timber Trail Lodge, Camp Epic (Glamping) or Blackfern Lodge - see main link below for full accommodation and shuttle options
The trail is marked with blue and orange directional markers showing kilometre sections of the trail. The numbers are identical regardless of the direction you’re riding. Trail brochures, including maps, may be obtained online or from DOC offices nationwide.
Best ridden in the Pureora to Ongarue direction as this is mostly downhill.
