Trail starts out very gentle (ie green rated). It transitions to some rocky and rooty sections that are still quite manageable with a fairly easy grade (ie blue rated). The last little bit is rocky and steep up to the saddle (black rated).

Once near the head of the canyon, Alturas Lake Trail junctions with trails to Mattingly to the north (Wilderness=No Bikes) and Ross and Johnson Creeks to the south.
