Bailey Cove: The Steep Waterfall Connector
Bailey Cove is a short, dramatic connector known for its steep, rocky terrain and its picturesque passage alongside the Bailey Cove Branch, featuring a seasonal waterfall.
Key Trail Characteristics
⛰️ Steep and Very Rocky: Don't let the short distance fool you; Bailey Cove offers a quick, intense climb (or descent) over highly technical footing. Like Fanning and Chittamwood trails, it is defined by a dense mix of loose and embedded rocks, making the path steep and rugged.
Waterfall Reward: A major highlight of this trail is the beautiful wet-weather waterfall and series of cascades that tumble over the rocks of the Bailey Cove Branch, which the trail follows closely. This is one of the most scenic spots in the preserve after a good rain.
Critical Link: This trail is a key connector, linking the Jones Valley Loop Trail at the lower, easier elevations with the Walsingham Trail higher up the mountainside. It serves as an essential part of any comprehensive loop in the northern Blevins Gap system.
Primarily for Hiking due to the significant grade, erosion, and heavy rock content near the branch, Bailey Cove is best suited for hiking. While mountain biking is permissible, cyclists will encounter extremely difficult sections requiring a high level of technical skill, if not a short hike-a-bike.
Bailey Cove is an excellent short detour or connector that rewards the effort of its steep climb with the beautiful sights and sounds of flowing mountain water.
