Talbott’s Burning Mountain Trail is the primary climbing and access trail for the Burning Mountain Trail System west of New Castle, Colorado. The trail climbs the steep north slopes of the prominent hogback above town via a series of broad climbing turns, gaining roughly 1,360 feet over 3.6 miles to viewpoints overlooking the Colorado River corridor, New Castle, the Flat Tops, and surrounding mountains. It is a two-way, natural-surface singletrack with a relatively wide, machine-cut bench that allows easier passing and climbing than many narrower backcountry trails. It serves as the main entry point into the larger Burning Mountain loop, connecting riders to trails including Ward Peak, Fire in the Mountain, and Back to School. The trail is rated as Intermediate / Difficult, with sustained climbing with steeper pitches and a primarily uphill character that rewards riders with expansive views from the ridge.
