Chadwell Gap on Cumberland Mountain is one of those paths of least resistance that has been everything from a buffalo trail to a coal mining road.
Located on the Virginia side of Cumberland Mountain, the Chadwell Gap Trail climbs two miles to the top of Cumberland Mountain, where it joins the 21-mile Ridge Trail, the longest trail in Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.
Take a right at the Ridge Trail intersection, and it's 3.5 miles to Sand Cave and 4.5 miles to White Rocks.
Go left on the Ridge Trail, and it's a half-mile to Hensley Settlement, one of the loveliest and most interesting features in the park.
The hiking starts off easy and increases in difficulty as the trail approaches the crest of Cumberland Mountain. It is a gorgeous hike any time of the year, but especially in the fall.
After the last switchback, the Chadwell Gap Trail ascends a series of steps to the top of the ridge. A cliff face - part of the sandstone caprock - abuts the path. It's a steep, geologically interesting pitch, much like the section of the Alum Cave Trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as it climbs up to the bluffs.
A half-mile hike on the Ridge Trail took us to the Chadwell Gap campsite, one of three backcountry campsites off the Ridge Trail located within striking distance of Hensley Settlement.
To access the trailhead from US Route 58 Wilderness Road, at Mile Marker 9.2 Turn North on Caylor Rd (SR690) for 1.7 mi, turn Right on Dry Branch Rd (SR68
for .7 mi. Turn Left into parking area. Please leave room for horse trails to maneuver.
