Charouleau Gap Road is most often done as a cardio workout out-and-back from the parking area off S. Lago del Oro Parkway, or as a connector from the epic downhill of the Canada (pronounced "cahn-ya-dah") del Oro (CDO) Trail off the summit of Mt. Lemmon to the classic 50 Year/Golder Ranch trail system. Note that the road keeps going all the way to Oracle, but these additional 9 miles should only be attempted by those comfortable with extended, loose, steep downhills and tortuous hike-a-bikes It's basically a roller-coaster jeep road up and down the area's steepest hills and canyons. The more rideable and more ridden section - from the bottom of CDO to the Lago del Oro parking - is less extreme but still punctuated with multiple washouts, rock gardens, etc. Take the Cherry Tank Trail double track to the Hernia single track for a fun link-up to the Golder Ranch Trails.
