Chittamwood Trail: Short, Steep, and Rocky

Chittamwood Trail may be one of the shortest paths in the preserve, but it packs a significant punch of technical terrain, acting as a direct and rugged link between the flowing Walsingham Trail and the challenging Fanning Trail.

Key Trail Characteristics
Primary Focus: Hiking, like its neighbor, Fanning Trail, Chittamwood Trail is primarily a hiking route. The extremely short length combined with the heavy rock content makes it an exciting, albeit brief, challenge for foot traffic.

Highly Technical and Rocky The trail is characterized by loose rocks, embedded stone steps, and technical footing throughout its entirety. Users should expect a short, steep descent or ascent (depending on direction) that requires careful attention to balance and placement.

The Connector: Chittamwood Trail is an essential piece of the northern Blevins Gap loop, connecting the easier, bike-friendly Walsingham Trail to the steep, upper section of Fanning Trail. It is the critical transition point for those linking these two trails into a full circuit.

Biking is Extremely Difficult: While Walsingham Trail leading to it is rideable, the Chittamwood Trail, like Fanning, is not recommended for mountain biking. Cyclists attempting this path will almost certainly have to dismount and push their bikes due to the rock density and grade.

Chittamwood Trail is perfect for hikers looking to add a technical, brief challenge to their loop and experience the rocky core of Huntsville Mountain.
