La prima tappa, in cui è possibile dividere il percorso cicloturistico tra Assisi e Spoleto, parte da uno dei luoghi più belli e suggestivi dell’Umbria: Piazza della Basilica Inferiore, proprio ai piedi della splendida Basilica di San Francesco.

La frazione va da Assisi a Bevagna e si sviluppa quasi completamente in discesa e pianura, senza nessun tipo di difficoltà, se si esclude il chilometro di ascesa proprio nel cuore di Assisi, risultando perciò particolarmente adatta anche ai principianti. Questa prima tappa non è caratterizzata da un percorso in sede propria, ma si sviluppa quasi per intero su strade secondarie o di campagna e comunque con pochissimo traffico. Il fondo è quasi sempre asfaltato, se si escludono 3 chilometri di sterrato tra Cannara e Cantalupo.

Partiamo dai piedi della Basilica e scendiamo da Via Frate Elia, superiamo San Pietro e poi prendiamo a risalire, costeggiando il centro di Assisi, fino a raggiungere la meravigliosa Basilica di Santa Chiara (km 1,1). Saliamo ancora sulla sinistra fino a piazza del Comune e da qui continuiamo a salire fino all’incrocio con la strada principale: da qui a Bevagna non ci sarà più un metro di ascesa.

Giriamo a destra prestando attenzione al traffico fino al chilometro 3,1, quando giriamo a sinistra sulla ripida discesa che porta verso San Damiano. Al termine della discesa giriamo a sinistra e poco dopo raggiungiamo il Santuario di Rivotorto (km 6,4).

Continuiamo diritti fino al centro di Rivotorto, dove giriamo a destra in via Santa Maria della Spina e superiamo la E45, sfruttando uno stretto sottopassaggio che i meno abili nella guida potranno affrontare anche a piedi. Subito dopo giriamo a sinistra e iniziamo a pedalare su un reticolo di strade di campagna completamente prive di traffico fino a Cannara, che ci permetteranno di godere in tranquillità dei profumi e dei paesaggi di quest’angolo d’Umbria.

A Cannara rientriamo sulla viabilità principale per meno di un chilometro e poi svoltiamo di nuovo a sinistra, iniziando a costeggiare l’argine del fiume su una strada che, per circa 3 chilometri, diventa sterrata: il fondo è comunque molto ben battuto e si può addirittura affrontare anche con una bici da corsa.

La strada si snoda tra verdi campagne e ci conduce a Cantalupo, dove svoltiamo a sinistra e proseguiamo in direzione di Bevagna sempre per strade secondarie.

Al chilometro 22,6 sfruttiamo un sottopassaggio ciclopedonale per attraversare la strada principale e poi proseguire in direzione di Bevagna, dove arriviamo al chilometro 25,5. Entriamo nel centro storico e dopo aver pedalato per i vicoli del centro in breve tempo ci ritroviamo in piazza Silvestri, cuore di questa splendida città d’arte.
