Cobra: This is Hoogekraals most technical MTB single track and gets its black diamond rating for its tight switchbacks, rock gardens and a tricky rock slab into a tight corner. The surface is like the rest of Hoogekraal, clay and shale that is usually very grippy but can be slippery when wet. It is a loop that starts with a fun descent with plenty of descending features. The trail sports some awesome flow with sweet medium sized rollers, jumps and a small gap that can be avoided. It is a tiring trail to ride fast as the traverses require some pedaling input which makes an XC or marathon bike a good choice if ridden carefully. The faster you go the more challenging this trail becomes and has claimed many riders whose confidence was greater than their skill. The trail is suitable for intermediate riders but please take care until you know the trail. While there is some dispute as to the grade of this descent, some say it’s “only” a blue, the gnar is there, especially when the track has seen a lot of traffic, so take care.
The second part of the Cape Cobra is steep at first as it climbs back up to the main Hoogekraal loop. This can be tiring if you’ve raced your mates down the descent but gradually becomes less tortuous as you ascend. Enjoy the views and wildlife as you climb a grippy shale single track and rejoin the main loop where you’ll eventually top out and be able to take a break and enjoy the panoramic views of the Durbanville hills.
To access the Cape Cobra, take the well marked Hoogekraal main loop which is unidirectional and enjoy the fun single track that undulates and contains some fun rollers and a detour called The Gorge which creates an option to take in some table top jumps and short steep descents. Spykers Hill is the main climb at Hoogekraal and can feel quite long before it tops out at the Cape Cobra entrance which can't be missed thanks to its wooden "kraal" like entrance.
The Hoogekraal trail is on private land and forms part of tracks managed by the Tygerberg Mountain Bike Club. Please obey the club and trail rules and make sure you pay the trail fee via the honesty box or snapscan point at the start.
