Open hillsides offer stunning views and the trail is easy to access from the tarmac road leading up to the "Golf Ball' radio station on Lowther Hill. The initial descent is short then a small climb / traverse takes you up onto open hilltop via a small sheep track, if you reach the summit of East Mount Lowther you have gone past the small sheep track. The trail forks to the right and is quite vague at this point, in poor weather conditions it could be quite difficult to navigate. A steep open grassy descent (to the West of Lang Cleuch) takes you down to a new built (2020) estate road, follow this round to your right and climb up slightly before the road ends and you are back onto grassland, cross a small depression and join the old Dempster Road drovers track for the final descent. The track is quite vague in parts and very narrow with off camber sections. At the bottom cross the stream and a short steep bank puts you back on the road.
Access from the Mennock Pass or Wanlockhead village
The Lowther hills often see fast changing weather and low cloud, these hills become difficult terrain for both navigation and forward progress. Take additional equipment in line with the weather predictions.
