The trail starts by crossing a small scree field and then climbs steadily into the forest and follows the forested north facing slope up to the Sentinel - University saddle. The lush vegetation along the Hellgate Canyon trail is a stark contrast to the grassy west facing slopes and sparsely treed south facing slopes of Mount Sentinel. It feels like you have entered the wilds and left the city behind except for the buzz of the highway traffic passing through the canyon below.
The trail can be accessed from the Kim Williams trail or the saddle west of Mount Sentinel.
