Lion Head Trail follows the steep-ended ridge aptly named for the appearance of its upper portion when viewed from points on NH 16 north of Pinkham Notch Visitor Center - that forms the north wall of Tuckerman Ravine. The trail begins and ends on Tuckerman Ravine.Trail and thus provides provides an alternative, though much steeper, route to that heavily used trail. Lion Head Trail is especially important as an alternative when Tuckerman Ravine Trail over the headwall is closed during the spring or at other times when snow and ice screate hazardous conditions on that trail. The winter route of Lion Head Trail is considered the least dangerous route when for ascending Mt. Washington in winter conditions and is the most frequently used winter ascent route.
