Lizard: This short section ranks as one of the most fun trails on offer at Tokai. It's slightly off the beaten track but well worth seeking out. It rose from the ashes of the 2015 fire and has flow like never before with an unusually smooth firm hardpack surface, punctuated by a few roots. More XC than all-mountain the trail gets a green rating because of its smoothness and relative lack of trail features. Don't be fooled, as some are, ridden as fast as possible Lizard comes to life. Lizard starts life next to the DH2 trailhead on level 3. It starts with a relatively steep descent where speed control is key and some airtime is available off a low kicker. It heads South at speed, before a series of gentle berms lead to a gentle uphill. Carry speed through the previous corners and you'll barely notice the gradient. Two corners or so later, you hit a gentle, diagonal drop off. Roll it or pull up, that's your choice. A couple more bends and the crux corner arrives. This sharp left hander is tricky and a fast time down Lizard can be won or lost here. Lizard’s blend of smooth but ultra sticky berms and flatter corners are a winner
Is this trail for you? If you can manage your speed and handle the odd root and easy drop off, then this trail will be a breeze. Take it slowly if you’re new to TokaiMTB and you’ll soon get the hang of it. UPDATE - Lizard has been extended to add a single track section on the left hand side of the Main Jeep Track which runs to the fork just below the Vasbyt/DH3 trail head. \Just keep left as you exit the old Lizard exit.
This one way down only trail is accessed via the Level 3 Jeep Track next door to the entrance to DH2. Check the signage or you may find yourself on a black diamond trail
A TMNP level 3 activity permit is required to ride Tokai Forest MTB Trails. Day passes can be purchased at the picnic site/parking area. Please also join TokaiMTB for R400 p.a. Your money helps us to build and maintain these awesome trails.
