The M trail is one of the most well used trails in the Missoula valley. It rises quickly above the University of Montana campus with great views of the University area and downtown Missoula. The trail is wide and steep in sections with a number of benches along to way to take a break on and enjoy the views. The trail ends just beyond the iconic "M" but the Sentinel Summit and Hellgate Ridgeline trails both continue up to the peak of Mount Sentinel.
Parking is available at the "M" lot. There are a few parking spots designated for hikers. During the day when school is in session the rest of the lot requires are parking permit. The lot is occasionally used for pay parking during sporting events. Generally in the evenings and on weekends it is easy to get a parking spot.
