The Mara Lookout trail would have been more aptly named Cinnamon Ridge. For most of this trail you travel up or along a ridge that continues up to Mt Mara. Near the beginning, and especially near the top, the trail is loose and very steep. You are never exposed or in particular danger, but it detracts from what is a lovely hike, climbing through a variety of climates and rock formations. There are many breathtaking views of the Thompson River valley as you ascend; however, if you make it to the top, you are rewarded with one of the best views in the Thompson Okanagan region.
For variety, this trail can be done as a partial loop with the Cinnamon Ridge trail. E.g. Ascend the Cinnamon Ridge trail to connect with Mara Lookout, climb to the viewpoint and descend entirely on the Mara Lookout trail.
Similar to the Cinnamon Ridge trail, Mara Lookout is exposed to the sun and offers very little shade until you are almost at the top. The trail is best attempted on a clear day in early spring or autumn.
