This is the first part of the trail until it reaches the Big Bear Trail. In the first 1/2 mile you will come to Lightfeather hot springs. As you continue up the very slow elevation gain you will reach the intersection with Little Bear. This first section is not as interesting as taking Little Bear, and most hikers skip this first section. After that the trail is clearly visible until you reach a meadow with a little water fall on the right. This water fall is coming from Jordan warm springs. A visible trail going up the hill a short distance will lead you to a beautiful pool of warm water(90-100 degrees F) Just past this area you will find a big flat area with many campsites. After that the trail has been washed out in places and the hike turns into more of a river walk.
This trail can be accessed via the Middle Fork Trailhead
Traveling in the canyon means you wont get lost but it might take you a while to get to where you are going. Many many river crossings mean constantly wet feet.
This river floods frequently, making it hard to keep the trail open. Beaver dams stabilize the creek while also making some creek crossing deep.
Leafy vegetation such as willows grows very quickly and quite tall during the summer season. It can hide cairns and tread. As a result, special attention is needed to stay on the trail near where it crosses the river.
CAUTION-the water coming out of the ground at Lightfeather Hot Springs if very hot, it will burn you. Make sure you test the pools before getting in.
ATTENTION: Jordan Warm Springs is roughly 9 miles from the trail head. Be prepared The Jordan Warm Springs area is one of the most popular destinations in the wilderness. Please respect its beauty and leave no trace.
Be aware of flooding potential on the Middle Fork during snow melt and monsoon season. Check weather forecasts!
