Mount Ken is a continuation of the ECNZ pylon track and joints the ECNZ Pylon Track (Southern Section) with the ECNZ Pylon Track (Northern Section). Like the ECNZ track, Mount Ken is a 4x4 access road, although not as well maintained as the ECNZ pylon track. Some of the climbs are steeper but shorter than the ECNZ Pylon Track (Southern Section).
The Southern end of Mount Ken starts with a clearing and a fork in the track. The trail heading up the hill to the west is the service road to the Mount Ken transmission tower (and is a dead end, but has lovely views). The trail to the east will take you into privately owned land. The trail heading down and to the west, with a large metal and concrete block barrier, is the entrance to Mount Ken.
