The Mount Hillyer Trail starts on the Santa Clara Divide Road at Rosenita Saddle. A steady climb ramps up in difficulty to a 'test piece' switchback that stymies most attempts to climb. Once the ridge top is attained, a long, rolling section through meadows and open ponderosa pine forest leads to the summit of Mount Hillyer. The terrain becomes increasingly rocky, and there are many boulder gardens, 'slickrock' areas, and ramped logs. The trail eventually mellows and intersects with the Silver Moccasin Trail near Horse Flats CG.
