Skyline starts from the summit area of Haleakala National Park. This is a service road and was not constructed or maintained as a bike trail, it is loose cinder and rocks with high speeds possible, along with sharp and off camber corners. The upper part of the trail passes through Department of Hawaiian Homes land before entering the Kula Forest Reserve managed by the Department of Land and Natural Resources. This is also a hunting area with bird hunting season open from November 3rd to January 27th and goat hunting the remainder of the year. This is a remote area where rescue is difficult.
