The Sonot Connector was constructed in 2011-2012 for the Sonot Kkaazoot 50Km ski marathon as a permanent link between the BIrch Hill Recreation Area and Fort Wainwright/White Bear trails and the bottom of the Fort Wainwright Alpine Hill. The Sonot Kkaazoot race starts in downtown Fairbanks on the Chena River, goes up the river to Fort Wainwright, then over to the bottom of the Alpine Hill. From there it ascends the Connector, skis all the Birch Hill trails, then descends the connector and returns down the Chena River to finish downtown.
