The wilderness portion of the Stuart Peak trail begins at the Rattlesnake Wilderness boundary, skirts by Stuart and Mosquito Peaks, drops into the Glacier Lake basin, and then wraps around the end of a ridge and ends at the scenic and remote Sanders Lake.
The trail starts by following a ridge toward Stuart Peak and then swings north reaching a saddle with views of Twin Lakes below and Mineral Peak in the distance. Take the Start Ridge trail here to reach the summit of Stuart Peak. The trail follows the ridge north with gentle ups and downs until reaching the steep switchbacked drop into Glacier Lake basin. The trail crosses the basin and climbs gently to pass around the end of the ridge and reach Sanders Lake.
