William Hoeferlin was Born in 1898. He studied art in Switzerland, and was a cartographer. A cartographer is someone who creates maps. Some time in the late 1920's or early 1930's, Mr. Hoeferlin left his job with Rand McNally & Company to Publish maps and trail guides.
Some of the first real trail maps in the NJ NY area were a series of hiker region maps that were produced by William Hoeferlin in 1934. Mr. Hoeferlin continued to produce high quality maps and trail guides until is death in July of 1970.
A great void was left in trail map availability after Mr. Hoeferlin's Passing, and it wasn't until the NY NJ Trail Conference picked up the mantle in 1975 to help map trails and produce maps and guides in the area.
William Hoeferlin was an Artist, a Cartographer, and avid bird watcher. It was on a bird watching hike with his club, the Wanderbirds near the Hudson river that Mr Hoeferlin suffered a massive heart attack in the summer of 1970.
The William Hoeferlin trail was named after him to commemorate all the work he had done to further the availability of maps to the hiking community. After all, many of the earliest trails to be mapped in Wawayanda State park were originally mapped by Mr. Hoeferlin. It seems only fitting that this 1.8 mile trail is named after him. Original Description below...
Classic old school XC. Starts just past the main office parking lot. A steady moderately rocky climb before some rocky rolling descents. A few punchy little climbs peppered in there. Steadily rocky and rooty. Through pines and some rhododendrons. A few rock gardens to battle through. Old weathered rock so nothing sharp. An excellent warm up trail before hopping on the technical rhododendron roots of Plymouth.
