The trailhead is located on Twin Lakes road just as it turn East from Winthrop. Enough parking for eight cars. The trail ascends to Sun Mountain Lodge, connecting either to Black Bear at the big switchback, or continuing on to Patterson Lake and Cabin Trail to the South side of Sun Mountain Lodge where Chickadee Trailhead connects the remaining trails.
Heads up: 1) this trail is mostly on old forest road, 2) you need to take Pine Lake Rd for ~500 ft in the middle, 3) coming from Sun Mtn and headed to town, ignore the No Trespassing sign at Eagle Pine Rd -- that is indeed where the trail goes and it isn't signed there, 4) dogs are not allowed at all on this trail.
Driving directions to start from Winthrop: from the four-way stop sign in downtown Winthrop go east on hwy 20 about a half mile and turn right after crossing the bridge onto Twin Lakes Rd. Follow Twin Lakes Rd. about 1.5 miles to the Winthrop Trail trailhead.
